    Maths tuition - our approach

    Mastering the Basics of Maths
Many children struggle with maths because they’ve never fully mastered the basics. Satchel’s maths programme focuses on building strong mental maths skills, helping children develop quick and accurate calculation abilities. They learn to add and subtract without finger counting, master times tables by heart, and confidently perform all key operations.
Understanding the ‘Why’ Behind the Rules
Ever wondered why two negative signs make a positive or what algebra is really for? Satchel helps children understand the reasoning behind mathematical rules, rather than just memorising them. This deeper understanding boosts confidence and improves problem-solving skills.
    A Journey Towards Advanced Maths
Satchel guides children from recognising basic shapes to mastering complex topics like quadratic graphs and trigonometry. Along the way, they cover practical topics such as time, money, data, and measurement — giving them the tools to succeed in school and exams.
    Problem Solving
Strong mathematicians are confident problem solvers. Satchel’s word problem booklets and supplementary question sheets develop logical thinking, helping children tackle school and exam questions quickly and accurately.
    Maths Modules
The Satchel maths course is divided into key modules, designed to build confidence and mastery in essential maths skills. Children work on a mix of these modules each week, tailored to their individual needs.
    Early Number
Using engaging comic-style Satchel booklets, children explore early maths concepts like comparing sizes, understanding “more than” and “less than,” and sorting objects. They learn to count, associate numbers with quantities, and progress to number writing, sequencing, place value, and basic addition and subtraction.
    Number
Strong calculation skills are at the heart of confident maths learners. Children learn to add and subtract without finger counting, master times tables, and progress to column methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Advanced topics include decimals, order of operations, algebra, and quadratic equations.
    Reasoning
Satchel’s reasoning module helps children understand the “why” behind maths, not just the “how.” Topics include the meaning of the equals sign and why two negative signs make a positive — building problem-solving skills for school and exams.
    Shape and Measurement
Starting with basic shapes, children progress through angles, volume, and advanced topics like quadratic graphs and trigonometry. Real-life applications like time, money, data, and measurement are also covered.
    Word Problems
Satchel Word Problem booklets develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills, helping children tackle school and exam questions efficiently and confidently.
