English Tuition - Our Approach
Writing
Clear, accurate communication is a vital skill for success in school and life. Satchel’s writing module combines creativity and technical accuracy, encouraging children to write with imagination and flair while mastering spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Children start by developing pen control and technical writing skills before progressing to crafting complete pieces of work — learning to improve and refine their writing over time.
Reading
Confidence in reading is key to success in English. Satchel’s early reading levels use synthetic phonics and engaging, comic-style booklets to develop essential reading skills. As children advance, they work with more challenging texts and borrow books from the class library to read at home daily. The library offers a diverse range of modern and classic books to engage even the most reluctant readers.
Comprehension
Strong comprehension skills are crucial throughout school and in exams. Satchel comprehension booklets help children build vocabulary, answer increasingly complex questions, and develop an appreciation of a writer’s style. The booklets feature both classic and modern texts, encouraging children to explore complete books and deepen their understanding of language.
Grammar
A strong grasp of grammar is essential for accurate writing and exam success. Satchel’s grammar booklets cover the basics — such as word classes, tenses, and sentence structure — before moving on to more advanced topics. Children learn to recognise how grammar and punctuation can be used for effect, helping them develop a more sophisticated writing style.
Spelling and Vocabulary
A strong vocabulary improves both reading and writing. Regular reading helps build vocabulary naturally, while Satchel’s spelling and vocabulary booklets reinforce learning and introduce new words in context, helping children expand their language skills with confidence.
Flexible Learning
Satchel’s English course follows the national curriculum but adapts to each child’s individual needs. Children study a mix of these modules each week, with the content and order adjusted to match their targets, workload, and ability — ensuring steady progress and growing confidence.
