Building Confidence, Inspiring Potential
On Your Marks…
Most children begin their 11 Plus preparation at the start of Year 5. However, with entrance exams becoming increasingly competitive, many parents now choose to start 11 Plus tuition earlier to give their child the best possible head start.
At Satchel, we welcome younger children onto our 11 Plus programme, helping them build confidence and develop the core skills needed to succeed. Starting early allows children to progress at a comfortable pace, ensuring they feel prepared and confident when exam season arrives.

11 Plus Exams – what you need to know
Calderdale and Heckmondwike
From 2025, the Calderdale grammar schools (North Halifax Grammar School and Crossley Heath Grammar School) and Heckmondwike Grammar School will use the same provider for their 11 Plus entrance exam — Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE).
Children who wish to apply to both Calderdale and Heckmondwike will need to take two separate tests — one for the Calderdale schools and one for Heckmondwike.
Satchel Learning can also help with entry to other grammar schools in the country, including those who adopt a GL Assessment format.
FSCE 11 Plus Exam Overview
The FSCE 11 Plus exam is made up of three papers:
- Paper 1 – English
- Paper 2 – Maths
- Paper 3 – Creative Writing
Some questions will be multiple choice, while others will be constrained response (where children fill in missing letters or write answers in a box).
To be considered for a place, children must reach the required standard in each of the three papers. The test is age-weighted, meaning younger children (e.g., those born in August) will receive a small adjustment to their score to reflect their age compared to older children.
Exam Content and Structure
- The exam will cover content up to the end of Year 5 — more advanced topics like algebra, ratio, and proportion will not be included.
- However, the test is designed to be challenging, with more complex questions on familiar topics.
- Verbal reasoning-type questions may be included within the English section (e.g., vocabulary and spelling).
- There will be no non-verbal reasoning in the test.
The format of the exam is not published but has previously been:
Two papers (approximately 60 minutes each, with around 45 minutes of working time).
- Paper 1 includes definitions, comprehension, and maths (multiple choice).
- Paper 2 includes missing letters, maths, and creative writing (constraine response).
- A tape recording gives instructions for each section, and children cannot revisit previous sections once the time has ended.
